West Gippsland Healthcare Group (WGHG) is working towards a healthier environment with the adoption of a smoke free policy from 1st January 2009. WGHG management is seeking the support of patients, visitors and staff to refrain from smoking inside the buildings or on the grounds at West Gippsland Hospital and other WGHG sites from this date. Chief Executive Officer, Ormond Pearson, said, “Adopting this policy will help us achieve our responsibility of providing a safe and healthy work environment for our staff.” He also said, “We encourage everyone to help us achieve our mission of improving the health and wellbeing of every individual in our community by seeking help to quit smoking. ”For several years now smoking has been permitted in specified areas at West Gippsland Hospital. This will change as of January 1 with ‘No Smoking’ reminders placed strategically at our sites. Special consideration will be given to residents of West Gippsland Healthcare Group aged care facilities and patients receiving palliative care. People are encouraged to consult their doctor for support to quit smoking or visit www.quit.org.au for further information.
